DIY Masks That Will Complement Your Skin Care Treatments

Treatments and therapies provide an excellent way to reverse decades worth of aging and skin damage. However, maintenance between appointments is an essential component of your managing your skin’s overall health and wellbeing. At the Harley Institute in Atlanta, Georgia, we provide innovative and effective non-surgical therapies that help men and women of all ages revitalize and restore their skin. We want you to be successful by taking a long-term approach to properly caring for your skin, and that means establishing a daily and weekly care routine. One of the best ways to enhance your renewed skin’s brilliance is using masks. However, over the counter products found in drugstores and grocery aisles are often loaded with chemicals and ingredients that may actually hinder your healing. That’s why we want to offer a few basic DIY recipes that can be used from healthy, nutritious items that might already be in your kitchen.

First, A Few Words of Caution

Before using any masks or skin care products, speak with your cosmetologist and skin care professionals to ensure your skin is ready to be exposed to the ingredients used in these recipes. Also, avoid using any masks that contain products you are allergic to or that have caused sensitivities. Always test the finished mask on a small area of skin before applying to your face. Each mask should only be left on the skin for a maximum of 15 minutes. If you feel any discomfort or irritation, wash off immediately.

Honey, Milk and Oats

Milk and honey provides nourishing vitamins that will make your skin soft and smooth, while oats offer an anti-inflammatory boost that can relieve redness or swelling. Place one tablespoon of organic oats into a blender and grind down to a fine powder. Mix the oat powder with one tablespoon each of fresh milk and quality organic honey.

Aloe and Papaya

Aloe has incredible cooling and astringent effects, and papaya contains papain, a natural enzyme that will gently exfoliate dead skin cells. Carefully slice off a fresh piece of Aloe leaf, gathering two tablespoons of the clear gel like substance inside. Scrape the aloe into a glass bowl, and mix with one tablespoon of papaya. Blend with a fork or a blender if desired.

Chocolate Mousse

Scoop out the contents of half an avocado and mix with two tablespoons of organic 100% cocao powder. The caffeine and minerals in the cocoa powder will tighten and restore, and the avocado will give beneficial oils that will help and strengthen damaged skin.

Coconut Sugar

Coconut offers many benefits for skin. The medium-chain fatty acids inside coconut oil can reduce inflammation and protect your skin from acne causing bacteria and microbes. Combining the oil with sugar will add an additional exfoliating feature. Mix two tablespoons of coconut oil and one tablespoon of finely ground organic sugar for a mask that’s so good, you’ll want to eat it.
